Before you make a decision to buy any PVC pipe, it’s important to understand what kind of PVC pipe you need. PVC pipes are rigid, inexpensive, and highly resistant to corrosion. They vary in diameter, wall thickness, pressure rating, as well as flexibility and temperature resistance. Pipe sizes are manufactured in strict compliance with ASTM D1785 and ASTM D2665 specifications.
Flexibility Comparison: Pipes having dimensions 1/2″, 3/4″ 1″, 1.5″, & 2″, 3″, 4″, 6″, 8” are available as rolls and per foot. The larger sizes are not as flexible as the smaller sizes. An 8′ section of 3″ flexible pipe can be bent back on itself and easily form an egg or teardrop shape. An 8’ section of 8 PVC pipe cannot be bent as easily. The 6″ by 8’ PVC section can go to about 45 degrees by hand, and 90 degrees with power equipment. It should not be used in excessively high pressure conditions and should be in compliance with the pressure levels specified.
Technical Specifications of 8” PVC: 8-inch is available in Schedule 40, Schedule 80 and Class 200 Classifications. Pipe sizes are usually specified on it. Product marking should meet the requirements of ASTM D1785 and usually includes the manufacturer’s name or trademark, the nominal pipe size, the material designation code, the pipe schedule and pressure rating in psi. For each nominal pipe size, range of values for outer diameter, nominal pipe size, inner diameter, wall thickness and pipe classification are available. For e.g. for an 8” PVC nominal pipe size outer diameter, wall thickness and inner diameter values can range from 8.160″- 9.050″,.088″- .503″, 7.984″- 7.970″ respectively. Pipe classification can be of type LH PIP SDR 91, C-900 DR18 etc. But all of these pipes could be called 8 PVC nominal pipes. So it is very difficult for a customer to understand what it means by 8 PVC. Even the colors assigned to each can be confusing at times.
