How Diet and Lifestyle Changes Can Help Acid Reflux Problems

by | Sep 4, 2024 | Healthcare

Do you suffer from acid reflux, that chronic burning in your chest and throat that makes it hard to swallow and keep you from enjoying any type of food, particularly spicy foods? While acid reflux prevention measures can help to provide some relief, gaining true relief can only occur if you make necessary changes to your diet and lifestyle. I know that is not the news you want to hear, but fortunately, the changes are not that difficult to make.

Diet Changes to Make

  • Eat smaller meals more frequently. Smaller meals lead to less acid, which equals less chance of acid reflux.
  • Eat less spicy foods and other foods that can trigger reflux. Such foods cause more acid; by eating less of them, you have less chance of acid reflux.

Lifestyle Changes To Make

  • Do not go to bed for at least three to four hours after eating. Acid is produced after eating; you lie down right afterwards, that acid will move into your chest and throat, leading to heartburn, indigestion, and a poor night’s sleep.
  • Do not exercise for at least a few hours after eating. Acid is produced after eating; you jump around or lift heavy weights, that acid is bound to head into your chest and throat, leading to heartburn, indigestion, and a more stressful, less effective workout.

What To Do:

Be smart about how often you eat “trigger” foods that cause acid reflux and modify your schedule accordingly when it comes to when you sleep and work out in relation to your eating schedule. If you are smart about it, you can avoid acid reflux while still enjoying your favorite foods, better workouts, and better sleep.
