How to take care of eyes

Eyes are the most important organ of our body as we use our eyes everyday and yet we neglect to care for them and rarely pay attention until there is some serious problem. With today’s fast life, work pressure and lifestyles, with most of our work carried out on computers and the internet which is a visually intensive task, we do not get the opportunity to be kind to our eyes. You can maintain perfect eyesight for most part of your life by taking care of your eyes and protecting them against injury or infection. By maintaining good health of eyes, you can prevent loss of vision in your old age.

The most important factor in taking care of your eyes is having a good diet by eating lots of fruits and vegetables like carrots which is rich in beta carotene especially helpful in maintaining healthy eyes. You must incorporate vitamins A, C, and E in your food on a daily basis and eat citrus fruits, green leafy veggies, tomatoes, spinach, poultry and dairy products. You must also drink plenty of water as it helps reduce puffiness.

Though contact lenses are a good way to rid you off spectacles and make you look attractive, you must avoid wearing contact lenses for over 12 hours as it can cause permanent sight damage as well as extreme discomfort. You must also wear r UV protective sunglasses when out in the sun as prolonged exposure to UV rays can harm your eyesight.

You must also not spend too much time looking at your computer screen. You must take visual breaks for about five to 10 minutes every hour and look at a distant object either in your office or outside and then returning to your task. This helps your eyes focus better. You can also exercise you eyes by blinking them several times, by keeping your eyes closed, roll your eyeballs both clockwise and anticlockwise and take a deep breath. To relax you eyes you can rub your palms against each other till you feel them warm and lightly cup your eyes with your palms and relax for 60 seconds. This helps in soothing and relaxing tired eyes. You can also splash water on your face while closing your eyes. As it can give you an overall relaxing effect and help you feel refreshed.

You must visit your Optometrist every year and get your eyes checked to diagnose problems that may be fixed with glasses, contacts, or surgery. This will enable early detection of eye disease.
