All motorists in Illinois must have auto insurance coverage; this is a mandate by the state legislature. Having insurance is proof that the vehicle owner can cover and pay third parties for any accident where they have been named as the at-fault party. In Illinois, the vehicle owner is also asked to carry uninsured motorist coverage. Auto insurance in Illinois is mandatory for everyone owning fewer than 26 cars.
Once insured, your insurance company will issue an ID card. This card, or a copy of the declaration page of the policy, serves as proof of insurance in the event proof is needed.
There are two times when you might be asked to verify that you are insured:
If you are randomly selected to complete a questionnaire provided by the Secretary of State
If you are pulled over by a police officer. The officer also has the right to demand to see your driver’s license.
The minimum auto insurance coverage is:
Bodily injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per event
Property damage: $20,000 per accident
Uninsured motorist bodily injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per event
Other Optional Coverage
The minimum mandatory insurance is to ensure that you will take responsibility for the costs of medical care and property damage if you are found to have caused an accident. However, there is insurance available that covers you.
Collision: This form of insurance covers the cost to have your car repaired if you are involved in an accident.
Comprehensive: This covers other damage that your car may sustain. This covers damage from vandalism, hail damage, theft, etc.
Medical Payments: This insurance provides “first-party” medical benefits. You will be reimbursed for any expenses you have from an accident, regardless of who was at fault.
