Both types of bikes have different classes, features and benefits. Our local cycling enthusiasts demystify the subject for your info. Take a look.

What are Step Over Electric Bikes?

Step over electric bikes are e-bikes falling into Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3. Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes are pedal assist, while Class 2 e-bikes are throttle assist.

Throttle assist bikes typically have throttle controls mounted on their handlebars. The control lets you throttle up or down, enhancing speed and acceleration without pedaling. Pedal-assist bikes have special motors that send electric power to the bike’s pedals.

Step-over bikes have a central top tube that extends between your knees or your thighs when you’re standing still, straddling the bike. Step-through bikes to do not have this central top tube.

What are Step Through Electric Bikes?

Step-through electric bikes can be mounted and dismounted by stepping directly through the frame itself. Since there’s no central top tube, you don’t have to kick your whole leg way up and over the bike’s frame. This helps maintain discretion if you happen to be wearing a dress, a kilt or other potentially revealing item of clothing.

Some enthusiasts say that step-through electric bikes are gentler on your clothing. The absence of the top tube means there’s less friction against the clothing fabric between your knees or your thighs.
