Using Raw DNA Upload Sites

by | Sep 7, 2021 | Healthcare

DNA testing sites such as 23andMe, MyHeritage, and AncestryDNA have customers provide a sample of DNA, either a cheek swab or a small amount of spit, to complete an analysis of their genetic material.

From the data, the DNA testing sites create reports that are in user-friendly charts, maps, and short articles to explain the findings. These reports are confined to the services offered by the DNA testing services, with no option for consumers to get customized information. However, the top DNA testing sites also allow customers to download their raw DNA data, which can be used to find specific information.

Specialized Sites

There are a growing number of raw DNA upload sites that provide very specific information. These sites may be free, or they may charge a small fee to provide information on aspects of the raw DNA data you provide.

Some examples of these types of sites include:

  • Fitness and nutrition – learn how to optimize workouts, recovery, and diet at GenoPlate, Athletigen, Vitagene, and DNA Fit
  • Family Tree – for a deeper diver, consider uploading raw DNA to GEDmatch, LivingDNA, DNA Land, Family Tree DNA, MyHeritage DNA
  • Scientific research – learn about various markers by reviewing the latest in scientific papers at Promethease or Genomelink
  • Help science and research – contribute to ongoing medical research at SanoGenetics and Luna DNA

Always take the time and read the fine print on any raw DNA upload sites. Many of the sites are free and provide a wealth of information but also allow others on the site to see your DNA data.
