What to Expect Living in a Condo

by | Jan 16, 2017 | Real Estate

Living in a condo is different than living in an apartment, and it is certainly different from living in a house. Some of these differences are for the better and others, not so much. Which is best for you is a personal choice, but that is not what this is about. For those looking for downtown San Diego real estate, and condos in other cities, this is for you. When you live in a condo there are a few things that will be different that you should expect.

No Lawn Maintenance

For those coming from an apartment this will not change, but for those who may be moving from a house this is often a welcome change. Instead of having to maintain the common grounds, you will pay a maintenance fee, which will cover the grounds keeping. This also includes repairs to the building and the facilities included with the community such as the pool. You will need to inquire about these fees before purchasing your condo. They vary depending on the managing agency. Some will charge based on the size of your condo and others will charge a flat rate.

Check Out the Amenities

Like apartments, most condos come with some amenities. These are extras such as a pool and laundry room. Some communities will also have tennis courts and a gym. Your HOA fees go towards paying for all of this. If you are coming from a house this will be a bit of a culture shock at first, but the added luxury of a pool that you don’t have to clean is worth the cost.

You Still Own It

When you move into a condo you are purchasing the unit, but not the building. Since the building is shared changes can be suggested to the board and voted on by members of the community. Thanks to this you are still able to make changes like you would in a house, but they have to be approved by you neighbors.
